Help a Lady out!
Hello everyone and Hello 2017!
I hope you are taking care of yourselves and are actively doing the things that you love. Well, here we are, a month into the New Year. 2017 is what you make it, but that's the big picture, the tiny details are in the everyday, so what new ideas or actions are you going to implement during this present time?
I wish you luck with that, be it eating better, moving more, being more active in the activities that bring you joy - because when you are happy, well, it is contagious, so spread your happiness virus and infect others!!!
In France, it is customary to wish everyone 'bonne année' the whole month of January and some famous Frenchies, such as Yves Saint Laurent would send out New Year cards instead of Christmas cards, which I have started doing, because when in France, do as the French. Check out some of his cards, they are so vibrant! Vogue magazine published a story about them: YSL New Year cards.
French culture insight: 'bonne année' is never said before New Year's day, because to the French, it just doesn't make sense to say it beforehand, because the New Year has begun yet. Makes sense, right?
As you are contemplating your New Year's resolutions, I wanted to share with you some of my resolutions, and some magical things, for lack of a better term, that I have recently experienced.
Today's post is about the delicacy of asking for what you want. And, I need your help, please. I am asking for your thoughts, opinions, and actions to get what we want.
Stay with me here. Read time: 5 minutes
I have been conditioned to believe the following, perhaps you can relate:
Ask, and you shall receive. - The Bible
If you don't say what you want, then you won't get it. - Madonna
Never ask for what ought to be offered. - The Winter's Bone, by author Daniel Woodrell
Stop asking for things. - My husband
Context is everything, so applying these appropriate thoughts to the correct situations is tricky, because everything depends on context. Asking for things, is the art of manipulation to meet the desired goal. It's an art. Art is a skill. A skill must be honed, meaning practice makes perfect.
Living in a foreign land of France, where everything is set in it's ways, and me, the young brash American, well, let's just say I stick out like an ugly scar. But, scars tell a story, something that happened either good or bad, and we've learned to live with it (that's called being adaptable) and eventually forget it's there until you have to look in the mirror or experience a weird look because of it. Then again, what can one do?
I am often shocked due to maltreatment from some Frenchies, but then I must realize what did I do that sparked the rudeness? Obviously, I had broken some well known unspoken French rule, but because I'm not French, you get the dilemma.
I am often in hot water simply because I didn't know! How the hell am I suppose to know something I don't know!?! UGH!
Can you recall any kid asking you over and over again, Why? And because you are an adult and a little impatient because of life crap, you become huffy and throw a mini tantrum like a toddler? Well, even though I am not a kid, I do find when I ask why, it provokes the impatience of my fellow citizens. I am not doing it on purpose or with any maltreatment, it's simply that I don't understand WHY! So, instead of asking WHY, I must use other words (the art of asking) to reach my desired goal, but damn! It is such an arduous process and in another language too, ugh, do you get my pain?
Perhaps, I am acting like toddler. But, honestly, I just want to understand, and to understand, you need to know, AND you need to ask the right questions.
So, here's to the beautiful struggle of attempting to be a good human being in 2017, when it is so much easier to be a shitty one!
But that is the paradox, you see, when you take the time to practice the art of doing what you love, then you become happy, and happiness is contagious.
So, that is my New Year's resolution, just to do more things that bring me joy and hopefully everything else will just fall into place. And I am pleased to report, it has!
I recently started teaching belly dance/yoga at a local association, I may start another class at another location.

Frenchified for Life
is a fabulous little lifestyle blog about truly embracing French life!
My intent is to simply inspire you to create something unique and beautiful in your everyday life. The French have this wonderful and annoying habit of seeing the world through rose colored glasses, might as well learn something from them!
That said, I lift my glass to you!
By the way, I mention the name Cachou (or The Cash) a lot, I'm referring to her...
